Autarch WIP (Part 1)

After getting home about 9 I finished working on my last 3 Fire Prisms and I’m DONE exept for my “one more thing” mentioned in my last post.

Here’s about an hours work on one of my handful of Autarchs (the cheapest points wise at 75 points !)
Alls left is all the Jewels (blue for him) and cleanup.

Completion of Eldar Core Warhost for WARGamesCon

Right now all I have left to do is paint the green on the canopies of my 3 Fire Prisms — no more than 30 minutes of work tonight. So I’m counting this as done.

However I started thinking on it and I’ve decided I wanted to paint up an Autarch for the help of reserve rolls. I can’t justify having 6 bare Fire Prisms on the table on an Apocolypse sized game. I’d not be able to use the full “OMG It does WHAT?” 6 combined beam of the SunStorm. If opponents see those 6 tanks hiding the the background, they’ll be primary targets.

Base model count

Remember, I don’t count upgrades other than WYSIWYG weapons (no vehicle upgrades)…except for Mind War on FarSeer as they have to take a required power when I count how much I have. I could push this to 4500 points with wargear & vehicle upgrades quite easily and without wasting points. This count is assuming I finish a 96 point Autarch tonight (Banshee Mask, Power Weapon, Fusion Gun – if that’s the options I use).

Painted Army Stats (or, “How I learned to love the fact that I’m past the 3000 points painted mark”)

As of now (just as soon as I finished my 7 Wave Serpents) this is what I have painted in Biel-Tan fashion.
Note that no non-mandatory upgrades (for example, I gave the naked Farseer mind war since at least one power is required) other than WYSIWYG upgrades (like shuriken cannons on top and bottom of Wave Serpents and scatter lasers on the War Walkers) were included in the point costs — these are effectively bare bones models (no exarch powers, extraneous wargear or vehicle upgrades).

Special Chars: 1 / 6% / 210 pts
Phoenix Lords: 1 / 6% / 190 pts

Total Points: 3376
Total Models: 99

The above stats is from my own Web App army calculator which I’ve been fiddling with for a few weeks as Army Builder isn’t for iPad or iPhone or anything other than Windows. I’d like to have options while I was down at Wargamescon to rebuild my army – without taking my MacBook Pro.

Here’s the model list (what is painted, not what will be on the field at one time):

  • 40 Dire Avengers
  • 1 Dire Avenger Exarch with Dire Sword
  • 10 Howling Banshees
  • 1 Howling Banshee Exarch with Executioner
  • 1 Jain Zar
  • 15 Fire Dragons
  • 3 Fire Dragon Exarchs with Fire Pikes
  • 1 Eldrad Ulthran conversion
  • 1 Farseer
  • 3 Fire Prisms (Shuriken Catapults)
  • 7 Wave Serpents (Shuriken Cannons, top & bottom)
  • 6 War Walkers (Scatter Lasers)
  • 8 Eldar Jetbikes (Shuriken Catapults)
  • 4 Eldar Jetbikes (Shuriken Cannons)

Here’s the remaining models for my goal for my “due date for all painting for WargamesCon” iCal deadline on June 14th (1 week before Wargamescon — I would rather have a full week “off” before the event so I can relax 😉 )

  • 3 Fire Prisms
  • 10 Striking Scorpions
  • 1 Striking Scorpion Exarch with Scorpions Claw
  • 1 Striking Scorpion Exarch with Scorpions Bite
  • 1 Karandras
  • 6 objective markers (low priority)

Looking at the “to do” list I might be a day or two late depending on a few factors (I’m already pretty burned out, the 7 Wave Serpents took A LOT out of me)…. June 16th at the latest.

Once WargamesCon is over. I’ll have 2 more Falcon Chassis vehicles left unpainted and/or unassembled: a single Falcon and a “new” Night Spinner/Fire Prism kit (which I think I’ll have plenty of Fire Prisms — I’m not even going to bother making it convertible). I might just knock those two out just to have 15 painted Falcon Chassis models.

Ok here’s the nitty gritty (the pretty pictures):

7 Wave Serpents (part 2, very near completion)

Oh the light at the end of the tunnel!

All’s left is decaling, cleanup, clear coating, canopies and canopy painting. I might be done by tonight!

Decaling: I’ll have a Biel-Tan logo next to the cockpit, maybe a swordwind sword on the turret, and probably a Biel-Tan logo on the rear ramp (as Wave Serpents tend to show their backsides before releasing troops and being blown to bits by showing their rear armor).

Cleanup: I have some green and white to paint over from either chipping or misbrushing — you can see in the pics below where the white is on the green on the side vanes and there’s some green on the white on some of the underside.

Clear Coating: I always clear coat with Krylon Satin.

Canopies: There’s only 7 to do, instead of the 6 I had to do for my 3 fire prisms — won’t take long.

Wave Serpent #1 -> #6

Wave Serpent #7

I had painted the shuriken catapults as well as the shuriken cannons while I had them out. I did not have time to paint my alternate weapon choices for the top-end (4 bright lances, 2 scatter lasers from my 1500 point list), but that won’t be too difficult and I might paint them tonight while at Galaxy Comics working on the canopies.

I can’t wait to done. This has made the biggest mess on my dining room table than any of my previous projects. I honestly shouldn’t have done all 7 at one time, however I don’t think I would have painted them as quickly.

Less than 16 days to WargamesCon…

Less than 16 days to WargamesCon and despite my best efforts I still feel that I’m a bit behind.

Right now I have 7 wave serpents bodies on the table about a third to half way completed (I hate painting white!). All that is left on the tank bodies, is the chainmail for the metal bits, washing the metal bits, jeweling and cleaning up. I’ve still yet to reassemble and prime the turrets and shuriken cannons.

What I have painted in Biel-Tan style

Note: I do have a ton of Guardians & 6 Vypers in an old paint scheme.
Also Note: This is not the list that I’m taking, this is all that I have painted.

  • 15 Fire Dragons
  • 3 Fire Dragon Exarchs
  • 40 Dire Avengers
  • 1 Dire Avenger Exarch
  • 6 War Walkers
  • 3 Fire Prisms
  • 12 Eldar Jetbikes
  • 10 Howling Banshees
  • 1 Howling Banshee Exarch
  • 1 Jain Zar
  • 1 Converted Eldrad

WOW – 93 models!?!? I didn’t think I had that many painted already

To be painted

  • 7 Wave Serpents (on the table now!)
  • 12-13 Striking Scorpions (depending if I want to add Kanandras to that squad as I did Jain Zar). The banshees took me 3 nights, I’d expect about the same for these.
  • 3 Fire Prisms (2 of which I have all the parts for, still waiting on Brent for the remainder parts — no rush I have other things to paint this week and maybe next week 😉 ). It took me only 2-3 nights to paint my first 3… should be about the same for these.
  • 6 Objective Markers (low priority, but I’d still like to get them done). This should only take me 1-2 nights — if that.

That’s an estimated 8 nights of painting – not including my Wave Serpents that are on the table now (another 3-4 days for them).

If I complete my goal (it’s still looking good), I’ll have 116 (+6 objective) models painted in Biel-Tan fashion – a strong mix of infantry and vehicles. I can’t wait to take a picture that army on the table!

There’s a good chance I’ll be done with the Wave Serpents by Thursday evening (maybe Friday evening). I’m really wanting to have the bodies of the vehicles done tonight or mostly done tonight and then dedicate all Wednesday or Thursday evening to the 7 turrets and weapons (Shuriken Cannons, tops and bottom).

However, I honestly only need 4 Wave Serpents now, (if I’m taking a Sunstorm Apocolypse formation and I get the last 3 Fire Prisms assembled and painted) but I’ve already got the other 3 as done as the others so I’d rather spend the extra time and knock them out while I’m “In The Zone.”

For most folks this would seem like a lot (and it is!), but although the pressure’s on my 8pm-11pm times have been quite dedicated to finishing these out.

At this point I have well nearly 3000 points of Biel-Tan eldar painted, but it’s not quite what I planned. As soon as these serpents are painted, I’ll be well over that mark.

Possible painting projects if I have time

IF (wow that’s a big if!) I get done in time I’ve got a few more Dire Avengers Exarchs and a couple of Autarchs to paint up just in case I want to change my list up while I’m down there.

Looking to the Future

Although the Eldar codex is ‘meta weak’ and terribly over costed compared to most of the other codeces, the army is my first Wargaming love, and still my favorite model series of all time. It’s true that the Falcon design is older than some wargamers (1997), but it holds its age very well against the current models.

What will I paint next? I’m not sure. It will probably depend on what 6th edition has in store for the Eldar. I’ve planned on getting a gaggle of Vypers ready for painting (I think I have 4 on the Sprue and 6 which can be stripped and painted). I’ve also got a whole bunch of Aspect Warrior squads that could be painted (3-4 full squads of each aspect if I recall).

I’ve intentionally not touched Guardians as much as possible due to all the white I have to paint. I’ll get over that trepidation once I’m not so much in a crunch for painting and I can take a bit more time to help them look a bit better. The white that I have on my War Walkers is terrible, I’m not ashamed to admit it, but they’re painted and they look fine “on the table.”

I’m done with Jetbikes (unless I convert an Autarch on one, which that idea has been floating around in my mind) until new ones are released. My conversion is simple yet effective and I’ll bet it’ll blend well with the new ones when they’re released.

I’ve been tempted to purchase a big Forgeworld model as a reward  to myself for all the work that’s gone into this army. I’m torn between a Revenant Titan and/or a Cobra class Super Heavy. It’ll probably be August before I do such a thing though.

As usual you can keep up with my progress by clicking here the post will become non-sticky as soon as Wargamescon has started.

Something I forgot: Objective Markers (WargamesCon preperation).

Ok I completely forgot about finishing my Objective Markers until last night. Right now they’re on 30mm bases and they should be on 40mm bases (both in most current tournaments and according to rumor for the next edition, despite the fact the Assault on Black Reach markers are 30mm bases).

This’ll give me a bit more room to put my “Eldar Beacon Antennas” and perhaps a little mini-MINI-diorama or maybe fallen space marines being shot at/cut or an Eldar casualty.

This is very far down on my list of todo, but still up there before I go. Since the beacons are already completed (yet on another sized base), a third of the work is done already — now it’s just a matter of painting up and getting ideas for 6 objective dioramas.

You can see one of the beacons (one of the front antennas from the Falcon Sprue that I had extra of thanks to the Wave Serpent Kits) in the photo below:

And although I’ve been updating it lately, check out the stickied post Preparing for WargamesCon’s Campaign Track as I’ve been updating it much more often than I’ve been posting new posts – so you’ve probably not seen the updates on the RSS feeds.

3 Fire Prisms WIP (Part 1)

Banshees are done except Jain Zar and their aspect decal (and sealant) so I started on my Fire Prisms today as I didn’t think I wanted to paint 10 tanks in a row (putting the scorpions aside for now).

Good progress, but lots of cleanup and details

I plan on decaling the Banshees tonight to have them completely finished.

Howling Banshees (part 1, test model)

Just a slow start of 12 models (yes, I’m throwing Jain Zar in the line since she was there and based – although she’s not visible in the background 😉 )

It’s still a work in progress as I still need to wash the Powerblades blue and wash the base one last time (as well as aspect decals, jewels and sealing).
