Ok I’m done for the night…. it’s late for me and I got tired waiting for paint to dry.
Here’s what was done in the 2.5 hours of “work” tonight (although an hour of it was waiting):
I got 1 Hex Module completed with the hex lining so you can see how easy it really is…
First I lay my plastic Hex template over the new Hex Module and use a Sharpie to make lines as per the template.

BattleTech: Prospective Board Sizing & Hex Module Pattern

Hex Module Pattern First off I want to share, in the sprit of Open Source, the pattern for my Hex Module.
When I create my Hex Modules I make them with 1″ thick foam so that a level 2 hill covers a typically sized ‘mech pretty completely.
BattleTech Hex Pattern (Large Format Printer Required)
Remember to turn scaling OFF to make sure that it prints correctly. I have NOT tested this on a large format printer yet (I don’t have one), please feel free to test it and leave me feedback if it works or not.

It’s DONE!!
At least 7 hexes are done, I actually plan on making 3 more full hexes and 4 halves (to make more of a rectangle on the table).
It’s really amazing how quickly everything gets assembled and painted once one stopgap has passed (which was the template).
This table is REALLY Inexpensive:
Here’s a cost breakdown of materials:
5 bottles of Apple Barrel Quality Paints ($5.50) 1 8’x4’x1″ sheet of Foam Sheet ($13.

I have some more hills to add to this desert board, but it’s almost done!
I’m hoping to have everything on this board done by Thursday (3 more nights!)
Sure it’s not perfect, but it’s PLAYABLE (better than a plastic sheet!)

BattleTech: Custom Hex Template

Whew this one one of the most physically grueling mini-projects I’ve done. I actually (somehow) blistered the top of my index finger from the pressure I was exerting to cut through the plastic. Each of the cut-outs was painstakingly hand-cut with an ever-dulling razor blade templated by a small 1/8″ square wooden dowel.
The working side of the cutting table. The back side of the working media.
The results are pretty good.

BattleTech: 3d Terrain Progress (painting started)

I’ve started painting on my terrain. I’ve decided to go for a sand theme for the first “board”.
I’m only doing a 7 hex-module board (remember my modules will be 7 hexes wide face to face) so this board will be 21 hexes across from top to bottom. In my currently center hex-module I’ve got a depressed area for an oasis of water in the desert.
This depression is cut into the hex-module and there’s poster board on the bottom of it for painting (it blue) and drawing the hexes beneath it.

My Terrain Board WIP Some may think that I gave up after my dismal show up for BattleTech demo day last week. Oh no. I’m still playin’!
I’ve got 13 of the big hexes (“main boards”) done and I’m starting to work on the hills (and eventually the water on some of the main boards). Mind you this is all from just ONE of the 4′ by 9′ foam sheets. I still have 2 more.

Ok I was really hoping to cut 3 at a time, and in the process of trying this.. I got 2 bad hexes (too small), and one “good” one.
Once I cut the other 3 one at a time, I must say I’m pretty impressed considering I was cutting by eye-balling it with my posterboard template just laying on top of each one.
The pink ones are the final material… the “good” one was the first (and worst) cut.

First of all The Topps Company released the Official Master Unit List site yesterday (SkyHigh, their lead developer, was awesome enough to visit my site and personally thank me for the bloggable hoopla I gave them about their Coming Soon page). To be honest I’m both honored and humbled to be singled out.
I volunteered my coding skills if he needed any help, as it sure looks like a MVC PHP or Ruby site judging by the URLs and Flow Controllers, but I know how it’s harder to get help than just do it yourself.

I know this post only has a LITTLE to do with BattleTech, but I’m putting it here because it was a BattleTech project that peaked my interest.
As I’m working on my modular table, I’m working on the mathematical anatomy of a hexagon. I’ve noticed several things with my 2″ Hexagon grid:
First thing I did is that I drew lines across my Hex Grid at the angles of the hexagons themselves.

I got my 1″ foam from Home Depot last night (I had to special order that thickness). I got 3 sheets of 4 foot by 8 foot foam. Between that and some Hot Wire Foam Factory tools that I have (and one on order!), I should be able to create some very nice modular Hex Terrain.
So sorry about the blurriness, it was too dark to focus I suppose.
However I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to do it.
